On the auspicious occasion of Mahalaya, the heart of Kolkata witnessed a vibrant literary celebration organized by the emerging publishing house Oikkyotan. The grand event featured a literary gathering, poetry recitation session, and a felicitation ceremony that brought together nearly 200 literature enthusiasts and creative minds from across the city.
A highlight of the evening was the launch of 28 new books, marking a significant contribution to contemporary Bengali literature.
The event was graced by renowned poet and researcher Sudip Chandra Halder as Guest of Honour, along with Professor Tabarak Ali and Poet Sultana Parveen as special guests. Sudip Chandra Halder was ceremoniously welcomed with a traditional uttoriyo and presented with the Sharad Samman — a commemorative certificate of honour.
In his address, Poet Halder spoke eloquently about the cultural significance of the day:
“Today, there’s a festive spirit all around. The atmosphere of Durga Puja in Kolkata has begun since early morning with Birendra Kishore Bhadra’s recitation of the Chandi. The fields are blooming with kash flowers — it feels as though nature itself is ready to welcome Maa Durga. An event like this, at the dawn of Devi Paksha, is truly remarkable.”
He further emphasized the responsibility of the younger generation in sustaining and enriching the Bengali literary tradition:
“Bengali literature is immensely rich — a treasure of world literature. Young writers have a crucial role to play in advancing this legacy.”
However, he also issued a thoughtful caution:
“We must all remain vigilant so that the misuse of technology does not harm literature in any way.”
Professor Tabarak Ali, in his speech, highlighted the positive energy surrounding youth engagement in literature:
“In this age flooded with technology, it is truly heartening to see young people gathering around literature. I feel proud to be here.”
Poet Sultana Parveen echoed the sentiment, expressing:
“I’m overwhelmed by the dedication of the new generation of writers.”
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Sangbad Sahu, the head of Oikkyotan Publication, who expressed deep gratitude to all participants and called for continued support in nurturing literary talent.
Among other notable attendees were Riyali Basu, Nilima Mondal, Soumi Sarkar, Debasish Roy, Moumita Guria, Biprokash Das, and several other emerging voices in the literary scene.
As Kolkata welcomes the festive season, events like this reaffirm the city’s timeless connection with literature, culture, and creative expression.
