Freelancer or Agency? Shootup Media’s Pitch Against the Marketplace Model

Online freelancer marketplaces have made it easier than ever for founders to hire individual designers, developers and marketers cheaply, a trend that Shootup Media, a Delhi-based digital growth agency, says it competes against directly for a meaningful share of its prospective client base.

The agency’s argument against the marketplace model, according to founder Maniv Romeo, centers on coordination: a founder hiring separate freelancers for website design, copywriting and ad management takes on the project-management burden of aligning their work, whereas an agency like Shootup Media positions itself as a single accountable team already coordinating across those same disciplines internally. The company markets this as a meaningful advantage of its digital growth agency model over assembling a patchwork of independent contractors.

Freelancer marketplaces do offer real advantages the agency model generally cannot match on price alone, including access to a global pool of specialists and the ability to hire and release talent on a project-by-project basis without any ongoing contract commitment. Shootup Media has not disputed that freelancers can be cheaper on a line-item basis, framing its own value instead around the reduced coordination burden and consistency that come from working with one team already accustomed to collaborating internally.

Quality variance is a genuine risk on both sides of this comparison: freelancer marketplaces include both highly skilled specialists and inexperienced contractors of widely varying reliability, while boutique agencies like Shootup Media staff a small, fixed team whose individual skill level a founder cannot easily swap out mid-project the way they might replace an underperforming freelancer. The agency, which says it has served more than 200 clients since launching roughly five years ago, has not published data comparing client outcomes against founders who instead assembled freelancer teams for comparable work.

For founders with strong project-management skills and enough time to coordinate multiple contractors directly, freelancer marketplaces can offer meaningful cost savings over an agency retainer. For founders without that bandwidth, Shootup Media’s pitch — that coordination has real value worth paying for — reflects a genuine tradeoff rather than a marketing exaggeration, even if the company’s own packages are naturally positioned to look most favorable in that specific comparison.

Ultimately, the choice between a marketplace and an agency model often comes down less to price and more to how much a founder values having a single point of accountability versus retaining direct control over each individual hire.

Some founders adopt a hybrid approach, using freelancers for narrowly scoped, one-off tasks while retaining an agency like Shootup Media for ongoing, coordinated work across multiple disciplines simultaneously — a middle path that captures some of the marketplace model’s cost flexibility without fully sacrificing the coordination benefits an integrated team can provide.

Whichever path a founder chooses, the underlying tradeoff between cost and coordination is unlikely to disappear, since both freelancer marketplaces and boutique agencies continue to compete for the same population of budget-conscious startups without either model clearly displacing the other across the broader industry.

Marketplace platforms have also begun adding project-management and vetting features that narrow some of the coordination gap agencies traditionally filled, a development that could gradually shift the calculus in future years even if agencies like Shootup Media currently retain an edge for founders who prefer a single point of contact over managing that coordination themselves.
