By Shubman Gill has become the No. 1 ranked ODI batter, overtaking New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell in the latest ICC rankings.
His rise came on the back of strong scores in India’s recent ODI series against England, where he made an unbeaten 80 in the first match and 77 in the third ODI at Lord’s.
Mitchell has slipped to second place following a quieter stretch that included a score of 65 in an opening ODI against West Indies and two innings of 28 each.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma remain in third and fourth position respectively in the latest rankings.
In a separate development, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi jumped 230 places in the T20I batting rankings to reach 48th, up from 278th ahead of a series against Zimbabwe.
His climb followed a tally of 151 runs across a three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, including two half-centuries.
Gill’s rise to the top comes as he continues in his role as India’s ODI captain, a post he has held since October 2025 after replacing Rohit Sharma ahead of the Australia tour.
The rankings update follows India’s recent tour of England, where several batters produced strong performances in the white-ball leg.
The series ultimately went England’s way 2-1, with India’s six-wicket win in the first ODI at Birmingham followed by defeats at Cardiff and Lord’s. Joe Root was named Player of the Series after amassing 249 runs in the three matches.
Despite the series defeat, Gill’s consistency across the three matches has strengthened his case as one of the leading white-ball batters in world cricket heading into the next 12 months of fixtures.
ICC batting rankings are updated regularly based on recent performances, with points weighted more heavily toward matches played against stronger opposition and in bigger series.
Gill has held the India ODI captaincy since October 2025, when he replaced Rohit Sharma for the tour of Australia, and has since led the side through series against New Zealand and Australia.
