Indian equity benchmarks closed lower for a fifth consecutive session on Friday as crude oil prices continued to rise amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran.
The BSE Sensex declined 331.62 points, or 0.43 per cent, to close at 76,059.77. The Nifty 50 lost 102.15 points, also down 0.43 per cent, to finish at 23,767.45, breaching the 23,800 mark.
Auto, metal and energy stocks led the fall, as these sectors remain particularly exposed to swings in global crude oil prices.
IT and media stocks were the standout gainers of the session, ending higher and partially offsetting the broader market’s decline.
With Friday’s fall, both the Sensex and the Nifty have now closed lower for five sessions in a row.
